Admission to the UC system isn't just about grades. The Comprehensive Review process looks at your achievements in context of your opportunities. This journey guide highlights the key pillars you need to build throughout high school.

9th & 10th Grade

Build Your Foundation

Focus on academic excellence and exploring interests.

  • Complete A-G requirements with strong grades
  • Explore extracurriculars to find your passion
  • Challenge yourself with Honors/AP courses if available
  • Start a summer reading list or personal project
11th Grade

Deepen and Lead

This is the most critical year for your academic record.

  • Aim for your highest GPA (UC GPA is crucial here)
  • Take on leadership roles in your clubs or sports
  • Prepare for and take standardized tests (if submitting)
  • Begin researching specific UC campuses and majors
Summer

Draft & Reflect

Get a head start on the Personal Insight Questions (PIQs).

  • Brainstorm topics for your 4 PIQs
  • Participate in meaningful summer programs or internships
  • Draft initial responses to PIQ prompts
  • Narrow down your college list
12th Grade (Fall)

Apply & Polish

The final stretch to submit your application.

  • August 1st: UC Application opens
  • Refine and polish your PIQ essays
  • List all activities, awards, and volunteer work accurately
  • October 1 - December 2: Submission window
Winter & Spring

Update & Decide

Keep your grades up and await decisions.

  • Complete the Transfer Academic Update (if transfer)
  • March: Most admissions decisions released
  • May 1st: Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) deadline used by most campuses
